5 Rules To Making The Transition To A Healthy Lifestyles

RULE #1
Stop using the word diet. When people use this word, it indicates something temporary. Something unsustainable over a long period of time. Instead focus on changing you eating habits for long-term health benefits. In my personal observations of the many people I see, who flip-flop back and forth, 100% make the common mistake of not accepting changed eating habits as a lifestyle. Until one understands and accepts this concept fully, the results and success will be short lived and temporary just as the flawed mental approach that is associated with the word "diet". So stop dieting and start living better.

RULE #2
Stop associating working out with a gym. Most people feel they are unable to remain physically fit because they are unable to "get to the gym".  Having a gym membership is nice but not necessary. In fact, I find that most use it as a crutch for what I refer to as "false accountability": some feel that joining a gym will somehow make them more accountable because they are now forced to work out to justify the money spent on the gym membership. This is simply flawed and restrictive thinking. There are plenty of trainers, and training programs out there that are proving that one does not in fact need a gym to get in a good workout. And this leads me to rule number 3.

RULE #3
Focus on being active and living an active life. For starters, you simply do not need to work out like a maniac every day to see good results. People who do this tend to be the ones attempting to "out train bad eating habits". These people tend to over train beyond their physical capabilities leading to injury or disillusionment because they are not seeing the results "fast enough". Again, the key to success in health and fitness is to be committed to a lifestyle change. With that in mind, just simply focus on being more active and leading an active life. This can include things like family park outings, playing with your kids, walking, playing fetch with your dog, going swimming, using you car less for simple tasks that are in close proximity to your location, using stairs, going for a leisurely bike ride, walking around the mall (avoid the food court...LOL), or just getting out and about.

RULE #4
Attitude adjustment. Thinking and being outwardly positive to others and being confident in yourself. Appreciating the good things in your life as well as appreciating yourself. This is critical. Bad attitude, low confidence,  and most things associated as being negative will produce excess cortisol in the body, making anything related to your  health and fitness goals more difficult. This has been scientifically proven. There is no need to point you to any specific studies on this because it is a well known fact.

RULE #5
Eliminate time constraints. While it is good to have goals, it is often self-defeating or "not stacking the odds in your favor" when one starts to place time limits on their health and fitness goals. Notions like "I want to lose 20 lbs in 4 months" are very restrictive and in most cases, depending on the approach, UNATTAINABLE. Goals should always be open and geared, towards changing your lifestyle, and self improvement. So instead, a better example would be to say, "starting today I am going to lose weight and keep going until I am at the ideal weight for my size and body type". A goal like this is more attainable and more likely to be adopted as a LIFESTYLE change.
